're tracking developing news of an accident that shut down a san francisco intersection. a driver took out a fire hydrant at folsom and essex near the onramp to the bay bridge. claudine wong is out there. are they getting close to reopening it yet, claudine? >> reporter: well, close, probably not but they are doing some important work right now. within the last half-hour since we last checked in with you, the crews for this scaffolding company have started to arrive. once the bus gets out of the way, you can see the work they are doing. what they told me they need to do is repair the collapsed bottom part of the scaffolding. once they do that -- and that could take a while -- then they will test it to make sure it is safe. if you pan across essex, you can see the entire area is shut down. that's because the fire department is out there. if there's any question about the structural integrity. this is entrance to the bay bridge. traffic at this point, just has to go around. let me show you video from this morning. it was about 3:0 that a san francisco police officer try -- 3:30 that a san fr

in the dark on the peninsula and in san francisco they have fewer than 50 outages each. at one point yesterday morning pg&e says 125,000 customers had lost power. in san francisco heavy winds and rain snapped a power pole in the sunset district. 8400 customers lost power. in daly city ground saturating rain caused a 50-foot pine tree to fall on 280. the problem blocked two lanes and backed up traffic for an hour. a pothole caused problems for drivers on highway 4. witnesses say more than two dozen drivers ended up with flat tires after hitting that pothole. cal tran sent a crew out to repair the road. >>> overnight news a man is behind bars after leading officers on a high speed chase from san jose to the streets of oakland. the chp says the driver got on to interstate 880 toward oakland after failing to stop for a traffic violation. the chase lasted for several hours before the driver got off the freeway and stopped by spike strips near mountain view cemetery in piedmont. >>> all lanes have reopened on highway 580 in richmond. that is following a fatal accident. the chp says the pedestrian wa
in the upcoming term. california's proposition 8 is not on that list. ktvu's brian flores is in san francisco to tell us what that means for same-sex marriage here in california. >> reporter: hi, dave, good morning. it appears for now that opponents of proposition 8 will have to wait until the end of the week for any decision on this from the u.s. supreme court. we were waiting to hear some decision. but it appears the supreme court will at least delay it until about friday, though. the key was whether the prop was gonna be on their cases. now, if that happens, that means the decision won't come until june. this postpones any decision until later this week. come friday morning, we'll be at this to see if the supreme court agrees with the lower court on whether gay marriage is unconstitutional or if they will keep prop 8 as voted on back in 2008. a lot of reac-- a lot of reaction from the castro district. we'll stay on this. back to you. >> thank you. now, our washington, d.c. newsroom is also following this. coming up at 7:15, we'll have more analysis of what this morning's developments could

you can see san francisco police are in the process of shutting down essex street. now the water has been shut off and we showed you that in the last half hour but there is a new problem. if we pan over here, take a look at the construction site. you can see the scaffolding is compromised with some of the metal beams going down. the firefighter said he is not sure if that is stable or if that structure is compromised so if they can get the construction guys out here to make sure that it's not about to fall, they have shut down this street and they don't know when it will reopen. let me show you video from when all of this happened because there was quite a mess out here. it was shotting an estimated 30 feet in the air and 50,000 gallons came out before they were able to shut it off. again it started with a driver running through a red light and that's what police are telling ktvu channel 2 morning news. it started when this driver tried to turn on to essex and folsom and crashed into that fire hydrant. we don't know the extent of his injuries but we have video of the driver sitting o
